Staying Local

A Serene Escape: My Stay at The Lake House on Canandaigua

This year my husband and I decided to stay local(ish) for our weekend anniversary getaway trip. I wanted a place to relax, stay, and take in the views. I wanted a resort feel without the cost and I knew just the place! There are getaways you enjoy… and then there are getaways that stay with you. My time at The Lake House on Canandaigua falls squarely into the second category — a place where calm meets character, and where every sunrise feels like a small gift.

First Impressions: Lakeside Luxury With Heart

Pulling into the property, the first thing that struck me was the sense of openness. The Lake House doesn’t overwhelm you with grandeur; instead, it welcomes you with understated elegance — white clapboard buildings, wide porches, and that unmistakable Finger Lakes breeze drifting in from the water.

  • Thoughtful design touches: natural wood, soft textures, and a palette that mirrors the lake itself.

  • A lobby that feels like a living room: cozy seating, curated books, and a fireplace that practically begs you to stay awhile.

  • A view that instantly slows your pulse: the shimmering expanse of Canandaigua Lake stretching out just beyond the lawn.

The pool had a picturesque view right to the water! Everything was so thoughtfully designed for elegance!

The Rooms: Calm, Clean, and Comfort-Forward

My room felt like a modern lakeside cottage — bright, airy, and intentionally simple. The kind of space where you drop your bags and immediately exhale.

  • Private balcony moments: morning coffee with mist rising off the lake.

  • Spa-like bathrooms: rainfall showers and plush robes that make you linger.

  • Beds you melt into: crisp linens and cloud-soft pillows.

Dining at Rose Tavern:

Rustic Meets Refined

Dinner at Rose Tavern was a highlight. The restaurant leans into wood-fired cooking, seasonal ingredients, and a vibe that’s both elevated and unfussy. We made reservations prior to ensure we were able to experience this amazing spot!

  • Locally inspired dishes: think fresh trout, roasted vegetables, and house-made pastas.

  • Craft cocktails with personality: herbal, citrusy, and beautifully balanced.

  • A warm, communal atmosphere: perfect for lingering long after the plates are cleared.

On the second night we walked a short distance to a local restaurant in town. This was such a nice perk of the property! Everything was within a short walk or a quick drive!

Lakeside Living: Activities That Fill Your Soul

Whether you’re an adventurer or a relaxer, the property makes it easy to do exactly what you need.

  • Sunset swims in the heated pool: the water glowing gold as the day winds down.

  • Kayaking and paddleboarding: peaceful mornings exploring the shoreline.

  • Fire pits under the stars: s’mores, stories, and the soft crackle of wood. This was an amazing way to end the evening! We met so many incredible people sitting around the fire at night!

  • Spa treatments that reset your whole mood: massages, facials, and quiet spaces to unwind. Don’t get me started on the outdoor barrel saunas! The Lake House’s outdoor barrel saunas are part of the Willowbrook Spa, a wellness space designed to connect you with nature and the calming energy of Canandaigua Lake. They are situated right in front of the water giving you an incredible view! This unique experience was a highlight of our stay for sure!

Exploring Canandaigua and beyond: A Town With Charm

The Lake House is perfectly positioned for exploring the Finger Lakes region.

  • Boutiques and cafés along Main Street. We decided to venture out to enjoy Simply Crepes one morning and I highly recommend stopping in for yourself!

  • Nearby wineries and tasting rooms

  • Scenic drives through rolling vineyards

Every outing felt like discovering a new little treasure. One our favorite stops during our mini wine tour was a popular BBQ place! I know! I didn’t think I’d be mentioned a BBQ place on this romantic blog! But Smokin Petes Barbeque was a delicious surprise and a great quick afternoon snack!
